What makes this Tour Unique
Most visitors to Moab come for the national parks, but few realize that the surrounding desert contains thousands of archaeological sites left behind by ancient cultures.
This tour provides a deeper connection to the landscape by revealing the human history that shaped the region long before modern explorers arrived.
By understanding the stories behind the rock art and cultural sites, visitors gain a new appreciation for the desert environment and the people who once lived here.
Respecting Archaeological Sites
These ancient sites are incredibly fragile and must be protected for future generations.
Guests are asked to follow responsible visitation practices, including:
- Do not touch rock art panels
- Stay on designated paths
- Never climb on archaeological features
- Do not vandalize the panels by adding your name or anything else.
Protecting these cultural resources ensures that these incredible stories remain preserved for generations to come.
The Difference Between Petroglyphs and Pictographs
Not all rock art is created the same. While many people use the terms interchangeably, petroglyphs and pictographs are actually very different.
Petroglyphs
Petroglyphs are carved or pecked into the rock surface using stone tools. Ancient peoples removed the darker outer layer of the rock, revealing the lighter stone beneath to create images.
These carvings often include:
• Human-like figures
• Animals such as bighorn sheep or deer
• Symbols and abstract patterns
Petroglyphs are the most common type of rock art found around Moab and can last for thousands of years due to the durability of the stone.
Pictographs
Pictographs are painted onto the rock surface using natural pigments made from minerals, charcoal, and plant materials.
These images often feature:
• Handprints
• Figures and symbols
• Painted shields and ceremonial designs
Because pictographs sit on the surface rather than being carved in, they are more fragile and can fade over time.
Why It Matters
Understanding the difference helps you see these sites the way archaeologists do. Each style of rock art tells a different story about the people who created it, their tools, and their traditions.
On this tour, you may encounter both petroglyphs and pictographs, offering a deeper look into the rich cultural history of the Moab region.
Some were carved into the stone. Others were painted onto it. All of them are voices from the past, still speaking across time.
Educational Lectures & Cultural Presentations

The service by Matt and Captain Ron was excellent. Tasha was interesting as the boat narrator. The light show was beautiful. Highly recommend this tour!!Posted on Matt RTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Beautiful boat ride through the canyon! Dinner was also great.Posted on Jim OverturfTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Food was very good. All you can eat. The plain beef was great. The boat tour is a little shortened due to water levels. The boat tour light show was nice but the accompanying recorded music and history were a little on the religious side. But, it's Utah. I guess you have to expect that.
